This is a hilarious episode, where Homer decides to become a boxer, starting off fighting hobos/tramps, but ends up fighting the world champion, Drederick Tatum. The episode is taken from the 7th season

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation), long le creme de la creme of British television has announced today it is going to make radical changes to cover a £2 billion budget shortfall.

Evidence for Digital Pointless’ idiocy

I just signed into my Digital Pointless account (yes I do actually have one, though I created it to try and sell some domains).

Anyway, after signing in and making a case for my latest cause (a fibre optic network for Britain), I took a look at my Control Panel. Lone behold, I had received some negative talkupation/reputation from some “know-it-all” scammer who believed that PageRank was superior to visitors! Read the rest of this entry »

Digital Pointless and my fraudulent infamy

Somehow, I’ve managed to pick up a reputation for being against the Digital Point(less) forums - I’ve got no idea how…

Before I launch into a rant, I want to briefly explain why I detest DP with a vengeance. I first released how rubbish filled the forum was when I started visiting Webmaster-Talk *reminisces* Back then, I just accepted this as fact, it coming from knowledgeable sources on spamming (they know who they are!) Anyway, I decided to embark on the forums myself as although they’re full of scammers, spammers and other idiots. While my experience didn’t last long, a very quick peak in on the SEO “badvice” I found was enough to confirm my fears. Right, time for the main subject, a blog post about none-other than ME!

This blog post, coming from a Digital Point member who must have also noticed me at Webmaster-Talk seems to sum up my feelings, even if it is slightly biased. Read the rest of this entry »

Calling all British citezens!

A while ago, I signed a petition on the Prime Minister’s web site regarding forcing BT to upgrade to a fibre optic network. As I was browsing and the issue of broadband speed crept back into my mind, I decided to check it out again.

BT (British Telecom) is scheduling an overhaul of it’s services, which will finish by 2011. The current plan is to upgrade all homes to using IP telephones and cables which should bring broadband speeds up to a reasonable 24mbps.

However, Japan and other countries are already using broadband speeds which are considerably faster than this! 2011 is over 3 years away still so the speed gap will continue to grow between now and then.

I urge every British person reading this to sign the petition on the Prime Minister’s site - it only takes a minute and I think it’s worth it! Do you want to be using 24mbps in 2011 when Japan amongst other countries are using something like 150mbps?! Sign it now!

Whym Hosting web site finally goes live

I’ve finally completed the redesign of my hosting site - the trials and tribulations I’ve faced….

Screenshot of hosting site

Most of my issues were down to IE6, but I’ve managed to overcome most of them.

The actual redesign background and logo were given to me free from some very helpful people on the forums - who am I to refuse? :D

The REAL easiest way to display transparent PNGs in IE6

I’ve been searching around for a long time to find a solution to IE6’s stupid lack of support for transparent PNGs. I read numerous tutorials to find hacks for IE6, with methods including Javascript, HTC files and the official Microsoft hack. However, I repeatedly disappointingly found I could get none of these working (I’m aware some people did get them to work, but I couldn’t).

Then thanks to a genius on the Webmaster-Talk forums, Adam Senour, I found a fantastic way to get these working on my site. The solution is actually very simply, is purely CSS based and doesn’t involve making any new images! Here we go:

1) Rather than using the img tag in your HTML file, make an empty div tag and give it an ID. For this tutorial, I’ll call it “logo”. Read the rest of this entry »

5 reasons to use Firefox (and dump IE)

If you aren’t using Firefox, a free open source browser, you should be! Why? I’ll explain below:

1) Customizability. Firefox, unlike Internet Explorer, has a bewildering number of addons and plugins that are available to customize the browsing experience - from themes to security additions to media enhancements, it has it all. On my Windows PC, I’ve got add ons including FasterFox; designed to speed up the browser (even more than usual), Greasemonkey; allowing even further customization by enabling script installs for the browser and Flashblock; which as the name suggests blocks flash on web pages, only being enabled when you click to enable it. I’ve got several more, but these 3 are some of the best.

2) Security. You might think that an open source browser would be more susceptible to hacking since everyone can see exactly how it runs, but this strictly isn’t true. Firefox may or may not be a more secure browser if it had the same market share as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, but at the moment, it doesn’t so is generally far less targeted by hackers. When Firefox vulnerabilities are found, they are usually patched quite quickly, denying hackers the chance to exploit these. Read the rest of this entry »

24 ways to impress your friends

24ways.org makes for an interesting read for web designers and developers. The site has, as the site name suggests, 24 ways to impress your friends (or visitors in this case) with different techniques, and has articles including CSS, Javascript and image editing. It’s definitely worth a look.

Incidentally, I am working on a redesign of my web hosting site, Whym Web Hosting, because I feel the use of a WYSIWYG editor makes the site less unique, not to mention the unnecessary markup that it chucks out.

If you are interested, you can see the ongoing redesign here. Please bear in mind that my CSS skills aren’t far from non-existent and that I’m still learning XHTML!

Problems with proxies

After finding out that my cPanel mail ports are blocked at college, I decided to set up a proxy to work around this (I can use both sides of my brain you know! :D)

This however proved harder than I thought it would be. I started off with cPanel proxy, and uploadable file that uses subdomains to hide the port numbers. However, after installing and testing, I found all this actually did was redirect to the port after login, which is basically what I’ve already done - therefore, I doubt this will work at college (haven’t yet tested).

I therefore decided to go for another proxy option - using CGI scripts. I chose CGIProxy as it says you can also login to other sites without restriction (other GCI/PHP scripts probably do this too, but oh well…) So it’s all installe, and I’ve set up a the address as a password protected directory from inside cPanel, but once I actually get down to what I want to do, check email through the proxy, I find it is incredibly slow at loading the inbox so this probably isn’t such a fantastic idea as it seemed.
