Inactivity, programming and student governor

Inactivity - I’ll start off by apologizing for the long period of inactivity since my previous post. This is mostly due to a lack of enthusiasm to do anything worthwhile, serious boredom, a hectic few weeks at college and the transition to a new server for my hosting company. Anyway, I hope I’ll be able to blog a bit more now as college winds down.

Programming - I’ve been busy doing a bit of programming recently at college for the course. We’ve focused on Visual Basic.NET since it’s supposedly one of the easiest languages to learn and fairly easy to code in (since you don’t need to focus on hand-coding the GUI).

The main assessment task was to create a working prototype for a pizza restaurant. The waiters/staff were supposed to carry this around on handheld devices and take orders from customers. The hand in date for the final assessment (with documentation) was today but I seem to have missed the deadline for the improvements to the program which was last Wednesday :( If anyone wants to take a look at the program, you can download it here. I can’t promise that it won’t crash or will work on a PC without the .NET framework, but if it does work, don’t click buttons when you don’t have orders as you are asking for trouble! I can promise that it isn’t a virus (even if it has the name of setup.exe) By the way, the program isn’t called a very flattering name (PizzaArray) as this was the working title and I forgot to change it before I clicked “Publish” in VB.NET.

Student governor - It is possible that I may become the student governor of the entire college if I win the student elections which are/have been held (more about that later). I was selected by my tutor to stand for the position and was on the shortlist of 3 candidates :D The role entails having a say on the budgets of the college and representing students at board meetings and external functions. Stupidly however, the online vote for this was held between Wednesday last week and closed today (Monday) and I was only told about this TODAY! My course only takes place during Mondays, Tuesdays and half of Wednesday so I actually missed the online elections and wasn’t about to go round annoying people drumming up support for my campaign. My tutor says he may be able to get the elections reopened as he agrees with me that the voting period should last longer. Maybe I do have a chance with this…maybe not.

If you’ve read this far, thanks! As I said earlier, I hope I’ll be able to write something else soon rather than leaving a long gap between posts.

Dan

Cool, I’ll check out that program that you’re working on.

Good luck on student governor! From what I know of you, you seem to be the perfect person for the job!
